How Will Your Solar Panels Perform in Winter Weather?

The first winter storm of the season is wrapping up here in New England. As we gather our shovels, ice scrapers, salt, and other winter gear out of the closet, we embark on another journey and battle against mother nature. Skiers and snowboarders rejoice as the fresh snow evokes dreams of carving down the mountain. Others are less enthusiastic about having to deal with another 4-5 months of scraping, shoveling and shivering.

Inclement winter weather is also a concern for people who source their energy from the sun, and more specifically, the solar panels. As snow and rain continue to fall, it is important to keep track of your solar panels. Whether it is a residential projects or a commercial or utility sized project, it is vital that project owners monitor their panels to ensure they continue to run smoothly.

Good news: solar panels actually operate more efficiently in the cold weather. As long as snow, ice, and any other wintry detritus is removed from the panels, the cold temperatures will increase the output of solar modules. “Like most electronics, solar panels function more efficiently in cold conditions than in hot. This means that your panels will produce more power for each precious hour of sunshine during the short days of winter.” (EnergySage) Since most panels are mounted and installed at an angle, snow will usually slide off them as they bathe in the sun’s rays.

Bifacial Panels

Bifacial panels are solar modules that produce electricity from both sides of the panel. Since snow has a high surface albedo, bifacial solar modules have the potential to thrive in snowy conditions.

Bifacial modules are testing well in normal conditions, and could affect significant improvement in efficiency in areas that are more snowy.
